Peru Amazon Adventure – Discover the Magic of the Rainforest (4 Days / 3 Nights)
Welcome to your Peru Amazon Adventure in Tambopata! This immersive 4-day, 3-night itinerary takes you deep into the Amazon rainforest, beginning in Puerto Maldonado—the capital of biodiversity. From vibrant wildlife encounters to breathtaking canopy views, this Peru Amazon Adventure combines exploration, culture, and conservation for an unforgettable rainforest journey.
Arrival in Puerto Maldonado, Capital of Biodiversity
Your Peru Amazon Adventure begins in Puerto Maldonado, the capital of Madre de Dios and a true gateway to the Tambopata National Reserve. Known as Peru’s capital of biodiversity, this lively jungle town introduces you to rich ecosystems and incredible wildlife right from the start.
Day 1 – Start Your Peru Amazon Adventure in Puerto Maldonado
Puerto Maldonado is not only the capital of Madre de Dios, but also the starting point of your Amazon rainforest adventure in Peru. From here, you will take a one-hour bus ride followed by a one-hour boat trip to the lodge. During the ride, enjoy your first taste of Amazonian cuisine. As the city fades away, you’ll immerse yourself in the breathtaking rainforest landscapes.
The Lodge Experience
Arrive at a cozy eco-lodge nestled in a Brazil nut forest. The lodge offers a bar, massage room, and full dining service. Located on the edge of the Tambopata National Reserve, it also houses a research station for the Wired Amazon program. This pioneering citizen science initiative invites guests to participate in rainforest research. Current projects include Aerobotany, AmazonCam, and Discovering New Species.
Settle into your spacious 45-square-meter room. Each room features mosquito nets, a private bathroom, and an open window facing the rainforest, designed to enhance your connection with nature.
What’s Included: Your stay includes three daily meals, herbal teas, coffee, guided activities, and a welcome drink upon arrival. Round-trip airport transfers are provided, and guide service is offered at a 10:1 ratio for a personalized experience.
Afternoon Exploration: In the afternoon, climb the 35-meter observation tower. Enjoy panoramic views of the dense forest and spot toucans, macaws, and raptors soaring through the treetops.
Evening Activities: Before dinner, attend a lecture by Wired Amazon researchers on rainforest conservation. After dinner, join the “Discovering New Species” activity. With researchers, explore a nocturnal light trap to potentially uncover new species and contribute to biodiversity studies.
Day 2 – Peru Amazon Adventure with Macaws and AmazonCam
Macaw Clay Lick at Sunrise: Start early with a visit to the Macaw Clay Lick, one of the Amazon’s most vibrant wildlife spectacles. At dawn, dozens of macaws and hundreds of parrots gather along the riverbank. Watch discreetly as scarlet, green-winged, and blue-and-yellow macaws, along with smaller parrots, descend to ingest clay. This is a highlight of any Peru Amazon Adventure.
Wildlife Exploration with the AmazonCam Project: In the afternoon, take part in the AmazonCam Project. Place camera traps along forest trails to capture images of elusive wildlife. Your work directly contributes to research on animal populations and behavior.
Cultural Experience at a Local Farm: Later, visit a local Amazonian farm. Learn about sustainable agriculture and explore a variety of crops. Nearly every plant and tree has a purpose, reflecting the deep connection between local people and their land.
Day 3 – Peru Amazon Adventure in the Brazil Nut Forest
Brazil Nut Forest Exploration: Begin the day in the Brazil nut forest near the lodge. Learn about the origins of this vital Amazonian product and visit a nut-harvesting camp. Discover how towering Brazil nut trees sustain local communities and provide one of the region’s most sustainable incomes.
Afternoon Options: Choose from two unique activities:
-
Citizen Science in Tambopata: Fly a drone to capture aerial images of the canopy, then head to Lake Condenado for a close look at the rainforest ecosystem.
-
Medicinal Plants and AmazonCam: Set camera traps to monitor wildlife and explore the Medicinal Plants Trail. Learn about traditional healing plants like Sacha Garlic, Cat’s Claw, and Ayahuasca.
